A new electricity connection: steps, timelines and fees

Short answer: apply at e-st.lv or through your electricity trader. Within three days Sadales tīkls sends either a final price, if no line has to be built, or technical terms and an estimate. The whole thing takes anywhere from a few days to several months, depending on whether a line must be built.

Work out the load before you apply

The permitted load in amperes sets not only the connection price but also the monthly fee. Too high and you pay for spare capacity every month. Too low and the main breaker trips when the cooker, water heater and heat pump run together. Sadales tīkls has a load calculator, but an electrician works it out from your actual devices.

Step by step

  1. Application. At e-st.lv or through a trader. For up to 100 A you can look up the connection fee on the connection fee map.
  2. Answer in 3 days. If nothing needs building, a final price and a contract. If it does, technical terms and an estimate.
  3. Designer within 60 days. If the network must be built, choose an electrical network designer within 60 days and enter them at e-st.lv. The design is not included in the Sadales tīkls estimate.
  4. Design and building authority. The designer files the project in BIS. Once the building authority approves it, it goes to the Sadales tīkls portal. Sadales tīkls picks a contractor in about 15 days.
  5. Payment. Works start only after the invoice is paid. If nothing needs building, the load is provided within 15 days of payment.
  6. Your part. Sadales tīkls builds up to the connection box. A certified electrician prepares the wiring inside and the cable to the box. Then you submit a confirmation at e-st.lv.
  7. Meter and trader. Sadales tīkls gets in touch within two working days to fit the meter. All that is left is a contract with a trader.

Note: the monthly capacity fee starts when you submit the confirmation, even if you do not use any power yet. So submit it when you actually need electricity.

What it costs by the price list

In the Sadales tīkls price list the per-ampere fee depends on the distance to the existing 0.4 kV line (VAT included):

  • up to 50 m: €101.36 per ampere;
  • 51–150 m: €132.68 per ampere;
  • 151–300 m: €184.15 per ampere.

On top comes a connection fee: €117.21 on the low-voltage network, or €217.52 if extra mounting is needed. The designer is separate. See the exact amount for your address on the connection fee map, because every site needs a different amount of building.

What the electrician prepares meanwhile

Plan the panel before the walls

How many circuits, where the cooker, water heater, heat pump and charger go. Leave room in the panel for the next thing, so you do not need a second box a year later.

Fit RCDs from the start

For new wiring LBN 261-15 requires 30 mA for sockets and lighting, and a detached house also needs 300–500 mA at the incoming panel. More in the post about RCDs.

Lay the cable to the box

Your electrician lays the cable from the house to the Sadales tīkls box. Pick a route that does not cross a future terrace or path, so it never has to be dug up.

Measure before switching on

Before the first switch-on, measure insulation and earthing. The same as in a wiring inspection, only for a new house.

If an existing house needs more power

If the connection exists but there are too few amperes for a heat pump or charger, apply for a load change at the same e-st.lv. First work out whether you really need more or whether spreading the load over time is enough. More power also means a higher monthly fee.

What NextTek does

NextTek helps work out the load, builds the panel and wiring in the house, and prepares for the gate, cameras and heat pump. Sadales tīkls requires the internal wiring to be prepared by a certified electrician, so before the job we tell you who signs it. More on the electrician page.

Common questions

Where do I apply for a new electricity connection?
At the Sadales tīkls customer portal e-st.lv or through your electricity trader. Every later step, including choosing the designer and the confirmation, happens in the same portal.
How long does a connection take?
If no line needs building, the load is provided within 15 days of payment. With a design and construction it can take several months. Sadales tīkls sends its price answer within three days.
What does a new electricity connection cost?
By the price list, €101.36–184.15 per ampere depending on distance to the line, plus a €117.21 connection fee. The Sadales tīkls map shows the exact amount for an address.
Who pays for the design?
If the network must be built, you choose an electrical network designer yourself within 60 days. The design is not in the Sadales tīkls estimate, it is your separate cost.
What does the electrician do and what does Sadales tīkls do?
Sadales tīkls builds the line to the box and fits the meter. A certified electrician prepares the cable from the house to the box and the internal wiring, then you submit a confirmation at e-st.lv.
When does the monthly capacity fee start?
From the moment you submit the confirmation at e-st.lv that the internal wiring is ready. It is charged even if you use no power yet, so do not submit it too early.
How many amperes does a house need?
It depends on the heating and devices. A heat pump, an electric cooker and a charger need far more than a house with a gas boiler. Work out the load with an electrician or the Sadales tīkls calculator.
Can I get more power for an existing house?
Yes, as a load change at e-st.lv. First check whether spreading the load over time solves it, because more power also means a higher monthly fee.
